Chishuru

Putting modern West African food on the map with a Michelin Star

Led by chef Adejoké Bakare, Chishuru is the Michelin-starred modern West African restaurant in Fitzrovia. Born in Nigeria and shaped by Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa culinary traditions, Joké’s cooking reflects a deeply personal perspective - honouring the ingredients and flavours of West Africa while interpreting them through the lens of a London kitchen.

What began as a competition-winning pop-up in Brixton Village in 2020 quickly became one of London’s most talked-about restaurants, following an early review from Jay Rayner. After several years of pop-ups and a determined search for a permanent home, Chishuru opened in Fitzrovia in 2023, earning a Michelin star just five months later and making Bakare the first Black female chef in the UK to hold the accolade.

Our focus is on sharing her remarkable story and the cultural significance of her cooking, spotlighting Joké as a leader in her field, a remarkable woman in business, and Chishuru as one of the most important and exciting restaurants in London today.
